Viansa’s Commitment to Wetland Plants and Wetland Animals
At Viansa, wetlands conservation is more than concept, it is a commitment. Our beautiful Tuscan style Villa sits atop a rolling hill and looks down upon 90 acres of native plants, wetlands animals and a pristine environment we are dedicated to preserving.
Protecting Wetlands Animals and Wetlands Plants
Today, this coastal wetlands thrives. It was not always so. When we assumed stewardship of 175 acres, the coastal wetlands had been converted to grazing. Levees had been built to create additional land. The wetlands plants and wetlands animals had been forced from their natural habitat until Viansa spearheaded the substantial wetlands restoration effort. Working with biologists, engineers and wildlife experts we re-created a coastal wetlands that is home to thousands of waterfowl and a source of pride for Viansa.
Here, our hearts and hands are bound to the earth, nurturing the soils and vineyards that bring forth a bounty we share with thousands of people. The wines we make from Viansa vineyards reflect the ancient composition of soils upon which our winery rests. It is our privilege and responsibility to make preservation of this environment and its coastal wetlands part of our daily business.
Our coastal wetlands preserve is a sacred space set aside to protect life that is native to this wonderful land under our stewardship. Throughout the year we tend to wetlands restoration and welcomes canvasback ducks, great blue herons and other birds migrating along the Pacific Flyway. As many as 10,000 waterfowl have been counted on our coastal wetlands in a single day!
Viansa guests may also catch a glimpse of Canadian geese, graceful egrets, darting swallows and, perhaps, a rare tundra swan. Over 170 species of birds have been sighted on our restored coastal wetlands. This success is a great source of pride for people who call Viansa their professional home. Being part of wetlands conservation adds even greater meaning to our daily lives.
Commitment to Wetlands Restoration
Restoration of our wetlands also calls for actively managing the native plants that embellish our natural preserve with delicate wildflowers in spring and summer, and wetlands plants that provide nesting sanctuaries for birds and other wetlands animals.
It is not uncommon to look down upon our coastal wetlands and forget the 21st century. Cattails sway in the soft breezes as red-tailed hawks soar above, and jackrabbits scurry in the reeds below. It is a timeless scene and, with our wetlands conservation efforts it will remain untouched by the passing decades.
We also seize upon the opportunity to share our coastal wetlands preserve with people who come to Viansa. To visit a natural oasis such as ours is a rare and valuable experience. It helps to ground us, remind of us the power, beauty and gift of nature. We invite our guests to quietly stroll Viansa’s wetlands preserve and take in the natural beauty it harbors.
