The Viansa Story

The Viansa Story

About Viansa

Ideally situated on a hilltop at the entrance to the legendary Sonoma Valley, Viansa Winery naturally embodies the proud history of local winemaking.

Sonoma is the birthplace of wine in California. It was here that Franciscan fathers first planted grapevines around the Sonoma mission over 150 years ago. In the early 1900s, Italian families left their homeland and settled in Sonoma Valley because the gently rolling hills and mild climate reminded them so much of Italy. Clinging to their native traditions, these families soon planted vineyards and began making wine much like their ancestors had before them. And thus a New World winemaking tradition was born.

Viansa Winery, with its distinctive Italian atmosphere and charming Old World architecture, is a tribute to those early Italian immigrants. Surrounded by vineyards and olive groves, and modeled after the charming, centuries-old villas that dot the Tuscan landscape, our main winery building looks as if it was magically transported from the Italian countryside. Painstakingly crafted from authentic materials, and boasting signature details like hand-painted interior frescoes and classic statuary, our Viansa Villa has the power to whisk visitors away to romantic Italy – if only for an hour or two.

Here at Viansa, we have further embraced Sonoma’s Italian heritage by focusing on producing Italian varietal wines and pairing them with authentic, Italian-inspired fare. In Italy, wine and food are enjoyed together at every meal, and here at Viansa Winery, we whole-heartedly embrace that same wine country lifestyle.
Please join us in a toast to the “inner Italian” that resides within each and every one of us!

Salute!

A Love Story That Has No End

Two decades ago, Viansa's founders fell in love with the land where our winery now is built.  They couldn't resist the softly rolling hills, and they marveled at the soil and climate that promised to produce extraordinary wine grapes.  They also keenly felt the desire to restore the acreage on the property that once had been wetlands but which had been converted to grazing land.

They also knew that because of their Italian heritage, another part of their dream would be to produce wines from Italian grape varieties.

So it was natural for them to put their love of the land together with their ancestry and envision a Tuscan estate where wine, food and Italian traditions would be shared and celebrated in an unparalleled natural setting.

It took time, but their vision began to take shape.  They chose the highest spot on the property--the crest of a hill with far-reaching views of Sonoma Valley--as the site for the Italian-inspired villa.

The hill also offered a variety of sun exposures, soils and degrees of slope for growing world-class wine grapes. They selected vineyard sites and began planting grapes and groves of olive trees.

Work on restoring the wetlands took place along with creating the rest of the estate.  Quickly - more quickly than imagined - the 90-acre preserve became home once again to native plants and wildlife.
